Silver Lake, CA-based Mirror Lady are recent winners of The Deli LA Band of The Month. We caught up with T.J. Petracca, songwriter for the band, a native of Park City, UT and recent graduate from Berklee College of Music, who now resides in Silver Lake, CA with his cat Whitey Bulger.
How did you get started in the music industry?
I got started in the music industry by skipping class in high school to record songs in my bedroom. Then I went to Berklee College of Music where I skipped class to record songs in my dorm room.
What has been the proudest moment in your career?
Getting to SXSW was something I always wanted to do and last year we made that happen for ourselves. Also, I’ve been really proud of the good reception my latest project Mirror Lady has been receiving on blogs and the internet.
What inspires you as a songwriter?
Most of my inspiration comes from things that happen in my life. The usual things that make people create art: love, love lost, alcohol, jealousy, etc. Living in Los Angeles is definitely a new source of inspiration for me, driving down Sunset past places like the Roxy and The Whisky and thinking about the amount of incredible songs this city has spit out is pretty inspirational.
You belong to BMI. Why did you choose that organization over the other Performance Rights Organizations?
I chose BMI when I was in high school… so I don’t know why I chose them.
What projects or events are coming up for you that the Songtrust readers should know about?
Mirror Lady has a new EP coming at the end of Februrary. We are also performing at SXSW at a party thrown by Indie Ambassador at Maggie Mae’s Rooftop on Thursday 3/15 and it’s going to be pretty ridiculous.
