Steven Tyler visited Congress this week to lobby for protection of intellectual property rights for songwriters. Steven Tyler is one of many public figures who has come out in support of songwriters and publishers following the The Songwriting Equity Act bill being introduced by Congressman Doug Collins this past February. After a few days of lobbying, Steven Tyler held a special concert near the Capitol building where many congressmen were in attendance including Congressman John Conyers who joined him onstage for his song, “Walk This Way”.
BMG, the fourth largest music rights management company, is looking to expand its operations into China this year. BMG’s parent company, Bertelsmann bought the stakes to BMG from private equity group Kohlberg Kravis Roberts last year, since then they have signed several high profile publishing deals with artists such as Mick Jagger and Robbie Williams.
Downtown Music Publishing has signed a worldwide publishing administration agreement with Parallel Music. The Nashville based company’s vast catalog includes number 1 hits such as “Mama’s Broken Heart” by Miranda Lambert and “Better Dig Two” by The Band Perry as well as cuts from Keith Urban, David Nail, and Eli Young Band.
Billboard has announced they will be introducing a “Billboard Twitter Real-Time Chart” this May. This chart will rank songs based on how much attention they are getting on twitter. After the success of incorporating data from youtube for their charts last year, this new addition will help the company continue to stay up to date with current trends in music popularity and consumption.
