Four Ways to Find Your Musical Voice

Find your voice, and you’ll find what makes your sound truly unique. This doesn't mean your potential has peaked, or there is no more room for growth. It simply means you found the musical track you are most comfortable on. And in many cases, that’s the first step towards achieving success.

Here are four creative methods that other musicians have mastered, and could easily be applied to your own career.

1. Follow your passion and influence

Musicians often avoid their most obvious influences in hopes of setting themselves apart from other songwriters. What it actually does is delay your progress. As a musician, you need to be true to yourself and feel comfortable following your influences. These very same passions will help you find your own footing and shape your signature sound.

2. Don't be afraid to fail

Failing is not a negative thing. In fact, failing is one of the most critical elements of success. By trying something, and failing at it — several times over sometimes — you are able to actually see what does and does not work. It is through this process that you will find your voice.

3. Just do it

One of the most simple ways to find your voice is to play and write as often as possible. The more you make music a part of your everyday life, the more you'll uncover styles and techniques that feel like second nature to you.

4. Have confidence in yourself

Finding your voice means knowing your music — the way you write and perform — is the right fit for you. Try feeling confident in your work from the get-go and see how it helps you find what’s best for you.

What’s the worst thing that could happen? Frankly, you’ve got nothing to lose.
