Rachel Foxx is an R&B and soul singer-songwriter from East London. She has been writing from a very young age and draws inspiration from artists she heard her mother play in the house such as Erykah Badu, Jill Scott, Donnell Jones, and Usher. She got her start by posting short catchy releases on her Soundcloud, grabbing the internet’s attention, and then making her performance debut on the Youtube series "COLORS." The session has now racked up over 1 million views. After the session took the internet by storm, Foxx began live shows around the U.K. and Europe.

WHAT OR WHO INSPIRED YOU TO GET INTO MUSIC?

I've just always been obsessed with music from a really young age. My mum would always play CDs in the house on repeat and that’s definitely played a big part in my inspirations.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE OF MUSIC AND PERFORMANCE? HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR PHILOSOPHY AND STYLE AS AN ARTIST?

I would describe my style of music as R&B and soul. I enjoy performing my music live and raw mostly, alongside my band. I would say my philosophy is honest and transparent, I write all my lyrics.

WHAT DRIVES YOU TO CREATE, AND HOW DO YOU DEFINE SUCCESS FOR YOURSELF IN MUSIC?

My urge to express myself drives me to create. I am not so open about my feelings on a normal basis, so writing music helps me a lot. I define success as touching people with my art...making people feel something.

THROUGHOUT YOUR CAREER, WHO HAS HELPED YOU THE MOST WITH DEVELOPMENT AND SUPPORT?

I think my family has supported me a lot throughout my career and of course my listeners. They encourage me to continue on my journey even when I don’t feel so good.

SOMETIMES BEING IN THIS BUSINESS CAN BE OVERWHELMING. DO YOU HAVE ANY TIPS FOR MAINTAINING PERSPECTIVE AND NOT SWEATING THE SMALL STUFF?

I’d say always keep your cool so you can have a well-rounded view. No point in sweating small things because you won’t even remember it two weeks later.

HOW DO YOU THINK THE MUSIC INDUSTRY CAN DEVELOP INTO A MORE EQUITABLE AND INCLUSIVE ENVIRONMENT FOR WOMEN MUSIC CREATORS?

I think we need more spaces exclusive to women only, most live lineups are really male-dominated, same with playlists. We need to shout out the ladies too because women are just as important.

DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR YOUNG WOMEN MUSICIANS JUST STARTING THEIR CAREERS, BASED ON WHAT YOU’VE EXPERIENCED?

Be as resilient as possible and stay motivated.

WOMEN ARE BECOMING MORE EMPOWERED, NOT ONLY IN KNOWING THEIR VALUE BUT ALSO IN SETTING BOUNDARIES, GOING AFTER WHAT THEY WANT AND DESERVE, AND LIFTING UP OTHER WOMEN IN THE PROCESS. WHAT MOTTO, AFFIRMATION, OR QUOTE EMPOWERS YOU?

“If you can dream it you can have it.”

WHAT DO YOU HAVE COMING UP IN 2022?

I will be releasing my EP "STREETS"! I can't wait to release a bunch of music and perform it live with my band.
