WHAT OR WHO INSPIRED YOU TO GET INTO MUSIC?
My dad. He had me DJing in church at 5 years old, haha, and he showed me a lot of movies like "The Temptations" and "The Five Heartbeats." Also, my cousin Nicole gave me her whole CD collection in 2004 and it changed my whole life.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE OF MUSIC AND PERFORMANCE? HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR PHILOSOPHY AND STYLE AS AN ARTIST?
My style of music is kind of a mesh of R&B and pop, with a mix of Lofi in it. I've performed about 50 times while I opened for Blackbear on the Digital Druglord tour. My philosophy is pretty simple. I just do me, and my style is just to be versatile and to do the unexpected.
WHAT DRIVES YOU TO CREATE, AND HOW DO YOU DEFINE SUCCESS FOR YOURSELF IN MUSIC?
Knowing I can impact somebody's day or life is a good feeling. Success is different in everybody's eyes but I feel like as long as people can relate to you then that's the success you really want.
THROUGHOUT YOUR CAREER, WHO HAS HELPED YOU THE MOST WITH DEVELOPMENT AND SUPPORT?
I would say, Travis Mills. He let me fly out and stay at his crib in 2012. That was my start, and then Blackbear. We wrote so many songs together while living with him; I was able to see greatness every day. There is support from so many people: My parents, my hometown, and my friends.
SOMETIMES BEING IN THIS BUSINESS CAN BE OVERWHELMING. DO YOU HAVE ANY TIPS FOR MAINTAINING PERSPECTIVE AND NOT SWEATING THE SMALL STUFF?
All I can say is whatever is supposed to happen will. Do not sweat this music game.
YOU STATED THAT YOU ONCE WANTED TO BE A NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC PHOTOGRAPHER AND HADN'T INTENDED TO GET INTO MUSIC. BUT THE TRANSITION ISN'T TOO FAR OFF GIVEN MANY ARTISTS SPEND A GOOD AMOUNT OF TIME ON THE VISUAL ELEMENTS THAT ACCOMPANY THEIR SONGS WHETHER IN IMAGE FORM, MUSIC VIDEOS, OR EVEN THE EXPERIENCE FANS WILL HAVE AT THEIR SHOWS. DO YOU BELIEVE IT'S IMPORTANT FOR CREATIVES TO TRY OTHER FORMS OF ART IN ADDITION TO THEIR OWN? HAVE YOU LEARNED OR GAINED ANY NEW SKILLS FROM ONE ART FORM -- SAY PHOTOGRAPHY -- THAT'S INFLUENCED ANOTHER, LIKE YOUR MUSIC?
I do want to work for them for sureeeee. But visuals are what people wanna see! It's cool to have a picture or an animation, but people want to see what your life looks like, what you move like, walk like, all of that, even how you laugh, you know. I honestly learned so much from going to Fashion Week 3 times and being on tour. Just appreciating the small things, like a flower garden or a mountain can be considered art, so when you open the artist's creativity door, the world is your sponge to use.
DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR YOUNG MUSICIANS JUST STARTING THEIR CAREERS, BASED ON WHAT YOU’VE EXPERIENCED?
Do not worry about streams! Make sure you've got the music that makes people want to listen, not just post on the day the song comes out. Don't just listen once and never again, you need to keep people's attention and make them want more. Also, put the music out, if you think it sitting on your hard drive forever is going to work, it ain't. Put it out and find out what can happen.
WHAT MOTTO, AFFIRMATION, OR QUOTE EMPOWERS, INSPIRES, OR MOTIVATES YOU?
"Eat with the people you starve with."
That quote is just perfect for people who don't know it takes more than one person to build an empire! You can't do this alone.
FOR FUN, IF YOU WERE STRANDED ON AN ISLAND AND COULD ONLY HAVE (3) ITEMS WITH YOU, WHAT WOULD YOU BRING?
Nintendo Switch, some Weed, and a Camera, haha.
WHAT DO YOU HAVE COMING UP NEXT?
I have an album coming out on April 29th, on my dad's birthday. He passed in 2018, so it's only right I honor him with something. And, hopefully, some shows this year! If not, next year and more good music and plaques :)
WHAT HAS YOUR EXPERIENCE WITH SONGTRUST BEEN LIKE SO FAR?
Songtrust has shown me that they can recover money for artists that they would never know about or are even notified of. It's a lifesaver.
