Overcoming Songwriter's Block

Even if songwriting is your passion, writer’s block can still happen or you find yourself stumped on what to write about next. It can be the most frustrating thing being unable to create new songs because you're unable to think of new ideas, stuck on the same idea, or unable to move forward with one you've already started - we totally get it. Here are just five different methods you can try to break through your writer’s block:

Behind the Songtrust Community

Before I started at Songtrust, my knowledge of music publishing was very limited. In fact, the only real knowledge I had of the music industry was about music supervising and sync licensing, but the thought about “how do songwriters earn money off their songs?” had definitely crossed my mind more than a few times. I grew up, for the majority, in a small town north of Dallas, TX. Four out of five of all my friends were musicians or in a band, and I spent most of my highschool evenings attending some obscure venue to watch my friends pour their heart and soul out on stage to a bunch of strangers.

Finding The Meaning of Music Publishing Through A&R

As an independent writer and musician, the words “music publishing” always gave me anxiety. Whenever it was brought up, it felt like someone was reminding me of an essay or test I had yet to start and really didn’t know where to begin. I’d tell myself that if I just dedicated a couple hours to looking up all the questions I kept asking myself about this seemingly irritatingly complicated part of the music industry, I could feel a little more confident in how I was handling my own catalogue of works -- and that all my owed royalties were being collected.

A Resonating Story For LGBTQ & Music

I've always believed that songwriters and musicians are some of our very best storytellers. Storytelling lends itself to visibility and representation, which fosters a sense of community. Community is anything that drives home the idea that you are not alone. Therefore, community does not need to come from a group of people that you know personally. In my closeted journey through high school and part of college, this was true for me. My community became the artists whose records I bought, whose shows I saw, whose words resonated with me.

LGBTQ in Music

We’re in an awakening of mainstream LGBTQ representation in music where artists all across the spectrum can find success in their careers, but there is still a significant amount of work to be done within our community when it comes to representation for all. In order to celebrate our present, we have to confront and remember the history that got us here. Queer music fans, now more than ever, are desperately seeking the validation that their stories matter and that music written towards their experiences can be shared experiences across the gender identity spectrum.

Off The Blockchain

I take delight anytime I’m at a tech gathering and no one brings up blockchain or bitcoin. It’s a buzz word and very few actually know what it means or what it entails. Blockchain is very fetch in that it’s not going to happen, at least not anytime soon. Mean girls reference aside, many critics are hyping blockchain up to be this magic bullet that can fix the music industry, bring us world peace, and make everyone and their mom happy. But just like using a unicorn to commute to work, it’s a nice thought but not actually feasible, and I’d like to break down why.
