INGRID CARRANZA is a singer, songwriter, and producer. She was born and raised in Ecuador and currently living in LA. Her passion for music started at a young age when she started playing the guitar while going to the school of music.
In 2020, she started her career and released her first single in Spanish “Nos Enamoramo’ Asi” in collaboration with Puerto Rican cuatro player Pablo Hernandez Mejías and producer Homero Gallardo. Her songs are a mix of urban pop rhythms with traditional instruments such as the Puerto Rican cuatro and the accordion. It also includes electric pianos which add that vintage sound and make it a great match for her sweet and mellow voice.
Her music genre is Latin pop, and her influences include Latin American traditional music, classical music, smooth jazz, EDM, pop, etc.
INGRID CARRANZA es una cantautora, compositora y productora. Su pasión por la música empezó mientras tomaba clases de guitarra en el conservatorio de música de su ciudad natal en Ecuador.
En el 2020, empezó su carrera como artista y lanzó su primer sencillo en español “Nos Enamoramo’ Así” en colaboración con el cuatrista puertorriqueño Pablo Hernández Mejías y bajo la producción de Homero Gallardo. Sus canciones son una mezcla de ritmos urbanos con instrumentos tradicionales como el cuatro y el acordeón. También incluye pianos eléctricos como el Rhodes, lo que le da un sonido vintage a sus canciones y una mezcla perfecta para el color dulce y melódico de su voz.
Su genero musical es pop latino y sus influencias incluyen música latinoamericana tradicional, música clásica, smooth jazz, EDM, pop, etc.
WHAT OR WHO INSPIRED YOU TO GET INTO MUSIC? | ¿Qué o quién te inspiró a meterte en la música?
Music is something that runs in the family, my mom used to play the piano; my dad, the guitar; my grandfather, the saxophone, etc. So, it was common to see them playing and singing at our family gatherings. So that passion for music has always been there and I started taking my first guitar lessons which helped me to write my first songs.
La música es algo que viene de familia, mi mama solía tocar el piano; mi papa, la guitarra; mi abuelo, el saxofón; etc. Era muy típico que en nuestras reuniones familiares se pusieran a cantar y a tocar. Entonces esa pasión por la música siempre ha estado ahí, pero fue algo que fue creciendo cuando empecé a tocar la guitarra y así fue como empecé a escribir mis primeras canciones.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE OF MUSIC AND PERFORMANCE? HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR PHILOSOPHY AND STYLE AS AN ARTIST? | ¿Cómo describiría su estilo de música y actuación? ¿Cómo describiría su filosofía y estilo como artista?
My style of music is Latin pop, I like the fusion of different rhythms, synths, and traditional instruments. My philosophy is to focus on melodies and lyrics first. Also, I would say in the production process, I follow simplicity and novelty in my sound.
Mi estilo es pop latino y me gusta la fusión de diferentes ritmos, sintetizadores e instrumentos tradicionales. Mi filosofía es enfocarme primero en la melodía y la letra. En la producción, me gusta enfocarme en lo simple y novedoso al momento de explorar sonidos.
WHAT DRIVES YOU TO CREATE, AND HOW DO YOU DEFINE SUCCESS FOR YOURSELF IN MUSIC? | ¿Qué te impulsa a crear y cómo defines el éxito en la música?
I would say it’s the need to express how I feel, my thoughts, my own and others’ experiences. Most of the time, melodies come out while I play my guitar, and depending on what the melody makes me feel, I put words on it. Also, inspiration comes from many sources, so I’m always taking notes of random ideas and recording melodies that come to my mind.
Success is very subjective. But for me, success in music is being happy with my craft. Being able to connect with others through my songs and feeling that what I’m doing has meaning for others. I know fame, recognition, awards, etc are sometimes markers of success but in the end, the most important thing is a long-term and sincere relationship with your audience.
Para mí, crear nace de la necesidad de querer expresar como me siento, lo que pienso, las cosas que vivo y lo que otros viven. La mayoría de las veces, mis canciones nacen de melodías que salen cuando estoy tocando guitarra. Según lo que eso me transmite, voy colocando palabras. También la inspiración viene de tantas maneras, entonces siempre estoy tomando notas y grabando melodías que se me vienen a la cabeza.
El éxito es algo tan personal y subjetivo. Pero para mí, el éxito en la música es sentirme feliz con mi arte, sentir que puedo conectar con otros a través de mis canciones y sentir que tienen un significado para ellos. Entiendo perfectamente que la fama, el reconocimiento y los premios, a veces, son marcadores del éxito, pero creo que al final lo más importante es tener una sincera y larga relación con la audiencia.
THROUGHOUT YOUR CAREER, WHO WERE THE MOST BENEFICIAL PEOPLE IN GETTING YOU TO WHERE YOU WANTED TO BE? WAS IT MANAGEMENT, ASSISTANTS, A&Rs? HOW DID THEY HELP? | A lo largo de su carrera, ¿quiénes fueron las personas más beneficiosas para llevarlo a donde deseaba estar? ¿Fue gerencia, asistentes, A & Rs? ¿Cómo ayudaron?
As an emerging artist, I think the most beneficial is management because it’s so critical to take the right step as you navigate through the music industry.
There are so many people that have helped me along the way that the list would be endless. I have had the opportunity to meet amazing people in the music industry through networking events such as ASCAP Expo, Billboard Latin Week, Tin Path South, etc. I like these events because you can meet people, ask for advice, and collaborate.
Como artista emergente, creo que lo más importante es un buen liderazgo o mánager porque pienso que es tan crucial cada paso que uno da mientras se va haciendo camino en la industria de la música.
Hay mucha gente que me ha ayudado que la lista sería interminable. He tenido la oportunidad de conocer gente maravillosa de la industria yendo a eventos como ASCAP Expo, Billboard Latin Week, Tin Path South, etc. Me gusta este tipo de eventos porque puedes conocer gente, pedir consejos y colaborar.
SOMETIMES BEING IN THIS BUSINESS CAN BE REALLY OVERWHELMING. DO YOU HAVE ANY TIPS FOR MAINTAINING PERSPECTIVE AND NOT SWEATING THE SMALL STUFF? | A veces, estar en este negocio puede ser realmente abrumador. ¿Tiene algún consejo para mantener la perspectiva y no preocuparse por las cosas pequeñas?
Yes, totally true! Even if you’re signed or an independent artist, the weight of your career is on your shoulders, and that’s a big deal.
It’s important to realize that this career will always have ups and downs. My advice would be to try to “zoom-out” every situation and look at the big picture. Don’t worry about small setbacks and look at the progress you have made from day one. Focus on your craft and rely on people that believe in you and your project, it’s impossible to do everything on your own.
¡Si, totalmente cierto! Da igual si un artista es independiente o si esta firmado bajo un sello discográfico, el peso de una carrera cae totalmente sobre nuestros hombros y esa es una responsabilidad muy grande.
Creo que hay que tener en mente que en esta carrera siempre va a haber altos y bajos. Mi consejo sería tratar de ver de lejos la situación y ver la película completa. No preocuparse por pequeñas derrotas o pequeños problemas, más bien diría que hay que estar consciente del progreso que uno ha venido haciendo desde el principio. A veces es muy fácil olvidar eso. Solo hay que seguir y enfocarse en lo que uno hace con su arte y trabajar duro con gente que crea en uno y en lo que uno hace porque es imposible hacer todo solo.
HOW DO YOU THINK THE MUSIC INDUSTRY CAN DEVELOP INTO A MORE EQUITABLE AND WELCOMING SPACE FOR HISPANIC AND LATINX MUSIC CREATORS? | ¿Cómo cree que la industria de la música puede convertirse en un espacio más equitativo y acogedor para los creadores de música hispanos y latinos?
From my perspective, I think progress has been made but still there’s a long way to go. We need to keep creating awareness about this topic but also, I think that collaboration is so important these days. To reach equality, one of the main components would be sharing data to analyze and understand what we’re missing in terms of providing opportunities to our Hispanic and Latinx music creators. For example, finding inequalities in playlisting, charts, concert bookings, festival lineups, etc.
Desde mi punto de vista, creo que se ha hecho un gran avance con respecto a esto, pero todavía falta mucho por hacer. Necesitamos seguir creando conciencia sobre este tema, pero también pienso que la colaboración es tan importante en estos tiempos. Para alcanzar igualdad, diría que algo fundamental sería recolectar y compartir información para analizar y entender donde estamos fallando al momento de crear oportunidades de igualdad para nosotros como creadores en la comunidad de Hispanos y Latinx. Por ejemplo, ver donde hay desigualdad en exposición al momento de concretar eventos, conciertos, posicionamiento en listas de reproducción, etc.
DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR YOUNG HISPANIC AND LATINX MUSICIANS JUST STARTING THEIR CAREERS, BASED ON WHAT YOU'VE EXPERIENCED? | ¿Tiene algún consejo para los jóvenes músicos hispanos y latinx que recién comienzan sus carreras, basado en lo que ha experimentado?
I would say: work hard is a must, be patient, go to networking events to connect with other people that have the same passion to create, collaborate, and learn.
Also, be open to feedback. In the creative process, it’s okay to do what you want and what you feel but it’s also important to be open-minded in terms of other people’s opinions and ideas because diversity it’s what enriches music. Knowledge is power, so be curious and don’t be afraid to ask.
Siempre digo que hay que trabajar duro, ser paciente, ir a eventos para conocer gente que tenga la misma pasión por crear, colaborar y aprender.
También, es muy importante ser abierto a la crítica, sobre todo cuando es constructiva. En el proceso creativo, esta bien hacer lo que uno quiere y siente, pero es muy importante estar abierto a escuchar diferentes opiniones e ideas porque la diversidad es lo que enriquece la música. El conocimiento es poder, entonces que nunca falte ese deseo por ser curioso y no tener miedo a preguntar.
HOW HAS BEING A MEMBER OF THE HISPANIC AND/OR LATINX COMMUNITY INFLUENCED YOUR MUSIC, IF AT ALL? | ¿Cómo ha influido en tu música ser miembro de la comunidad hispana y / o latina, si es que lo ha hecho?
The influence has been very strong for me. Our language is so rich in words to express our thoughts and feelings and our Latin rhythms evoke a natural desire to dance and express with our bodies. I was exposed to a whole palette of Latin music from boleros to cumbia, salsa, merengue, etc. Because of this, the Latin influence is something that somehow shows in most of my songs.
En mi caso la influencia ha sido muy fuerte. Nuestro lenguaje es tan rico en palabras para expresar nuestros pensamientos, sentimientos, etc. y los ritmos latinos evocan ese deseo natural por bailar y por expresarnos con nuestros cuerpos. Estuve muy expuesta a toda una paleta de música latina que va desde boleros hasta pop latino, cumbia, salsa, merengue, etc. Pienso que esa influencia Latina se refleja en la mayoría de mis canciones.
WHAT'S NEXT FOR YOU? ANY UPCOMING PROJECTS OR PLANS FOR 2021-2022? | ¿Qué sigue para ti? ¿Algún proyecto o plan futuro para 2021?
As an emerging artist, I’m focused on building my career. I’m spending a lot of time in my studio creating. I’ve also been working with other creators on new songs that I can’t wait to share!
I just released my latest single called “Aqui” that you can listen in all digital platforms and see the video on my Youtube channel. I will release my next song by the end of the year, a song that I co-wrote with Puerto Rican songwriter, Sol Santiago. So, stay tuned! ;)
Como artista emergente, estoy enfocada en construir mi carrera. He estado bastante tiempo en mi estudio creando y también he estado trabajando con otros colegas en nuevas canciones que tengo muchísimas ganas de compartir.
Recientemente, lance mi nuevo sencillo “Aquí”, la pueden escuchar en todas las plataformas digitales y también pueden ver el video oficial en mi canal de Youtube.
Próximamente, lanzaré mi nuevo sencillo a finales de este año, una canción que coescribí con Sol Santiago, compositora puertorriqueña. ¡Así que estén pendientes! ;)
