Data Trends and The Songwriter

As 2018 came to a close, our team went back and looked at all the data we had collected over the last year looking for trends that might stand out and give us insight into what we could expect for the new year. As we were discussing, this question of could we use our (and other’s reports) data reports to better help our clients plan for their goals in the upcoming year arose. In an ideal world - a songwriter could use these trends to predict their new year profits and make smarter business decisions for their career. Realistically, the data would be 100% correct, but that isn’t always the case. Our hope, however, is giving our creators a way to utilize music publishing trends to plan our their next year.

Off The Blockchain

I take delight anytime I’m at a tech gathering and no one brings up blockchain or bitcoin. It’s a buzz word and very few actually know what it means or what it entails. Blockchain is very fetch in that it’s not going to happen, at least not anytime soon. Mean girls reference aside, many critics are hyping blockchain up to be this magic bullet that can fix the music industry, bring us world peace, and make everyone and their mom happy. But just like using a unicorn to commute to work, it’s a nice thought but not actually feasible, and I’d like to break down why.

The Case for Data

I spent Valentine’s Day digging through fourteen million digital streaming assets trying to match them to those from our clients in our system. Three weeks later and I’m still not done. I don’t say this for you to feel sorry for me (although if you’d like to buy me flowers, dinner, etc. who am I to stop you!), I say this because I’m one of the few people in music publishing equipped to tackle problems like these using data. I write a structured query to run identifiers through our database and matches return, while my counterparts at other publishers are hand matching on an excel sheet. Why is this relevant? There are so few data savvy practitioners in this part of the music ecosystem and I want to give it a voice.
