Cesar William Gonzalez Bueno, better known as CWILLIAM, was born in the Dominican Republic. At a very young he discovered his passion for music and started to learn all he could about it. When he was 13 years old, Cwilliam started to play the guitar and piano, and eventually learned how to use Fl Studio. That's when he started to make beats for other people until his wife convinced him to also start rapping and/or singing.

WHAT OR WHO INSPIRED YOU TO GET INTO MUSIC?

Music is something that has lived within me back to the age in which I can barely remember myself as a kid. My biggest inspiration is nature and the satisfaction I get when I make people enjoy themselves when they listen to my music.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE OF MUSIC AND PERFORMANCE? HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR PHILOSOPHY AND STYLE AS AN ARTIST?

My style is unique, I always make music keeping what I like in mind. As an artist, I am also my biggest fan, so my style includes adding a pinch of what people like. An artist (think of it as a business) with no fans (or as customers) is nothing.

WHAT DRIVES YOU TO CREATE, AND HOW DO YOU DEFINE SUCCESS FOR YOURSELF IN MUSIC?

What drives me to make music every day is having pleasure in making a living doing what I love. The mere fact that I can make one penny doing what I love, to me, is synonymous with success.

THROUGHOUT YOUR CAREER, WHO WERE THE MOST BENEFICIAL PEOPLE IN GETTING YOU TO WHERE YOU WANTED TO BE? WAS IT MANAGEMENT, ASSISTANTS, A&RS? HOW DID THEY HELP?

The only help I have had throughout my career is the support of the people that consume my music. The person getting the most benefits from my career is my 8-year-old daughter, Alisson, who sees me working hard every day in order to get where I want to be. Alisson is also my little studio personnel since she is the one who listens to my music before I release it.

SOMETIMES BEING IN THIS BUSINESS CAN BE REALLY OVERWHELMING. DO YOU HAVE ANY TIPS FOR MAINTAINING PERSPECTIVE AND NOT SWEATING THE SMALL STUFF?

The best tip I can give is to never stop learning. See the music (whether it is a song, EP, an album, or just an instrumental) as the product you sell. Once you know how to make that product, you also need to know how to sell that product. Learning a few things about copyrights and royalties will also come in handy.

HOW DO YOU THINK THE MUSIC INDUSTRY CAN DEVELOP INTO A MORE EQUITABLE AND WELCOMING SPACE FOR HISPANIC AND LATINX MUSIC CREATORS?

I personally think that we all have equal opportunity in this business. Where most people fail, in my opinion, is ignoring something called "culture." As Hispanic, I know the genre Salsa but that doesn't mean that an Anglo-Saxon will like it, no matter how cool that genre is. That's not to say that because you are of a certain race that you can or can't like certain styles, but as an artist, you want people to consume your product and, therefore, to be successful in music, you have to keep in mind culture, language, and rhythm. Back in the Dominican Republic, one of my best friends was a girl from Japan. She loves Rhianna even when she didn't even know how to say "Hi" in English. When I asked, "why do you listen to music in a language you don't speak?", her answer was that she loves the rhythms (that instrumentals make her dance!).

DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR YOUNG HISPANIC AND LATINX MUSICIANS JUST STARTING THEIR CAREERS, BASED ON WHAT YOU'VE EXPERIENCED?

Ask yourself what kind of music you want to make and know where to promote your music. An example of this would be if you make "Ranchera" you won't be successful in promoting that genre in Russia. Pay attention to your product so you can know where to market it.

HOW HAS BEING A MEMBER OF THE HISPANIC AND/OR LATINX COMMUNITY INFLUENCED YOUR MUSIC, IF AT ALL?

I don't pay attention to races. I learned in school that what makes a person Hispanic is the fact that his or her first language (culture, not race) is Spanish. It has not influenced me at all. Eminem and Marc Anthony are my favorite artists.

WHAT'S NEXT FOR YOU? ANY UPCOMING PROJECTS OR PLANS FOR 2021? / ¿Qué sigue para ti? ¿Algún proyecto o plan futuro para 2021?

I am still learning a lot about music in general including royalties, mixing, mastering, etc. In 2021, I won't be releasing a lot of new content, however, I have a few singles ready to be released.

At this very moment, I am producing a lot of new material, writing new songs, including a few songs in English, and spending quality time with my daughters. In 2022, I will be releasing an EP.
